Lawrence Wells’ Ghostwriter: Shakespeare, Literary Landmines, and An Eccentric Patron’s Royal Obsessions, creative nonfiction (University Press of Mississippi, 2024) received the 2025 Bestsellers silver award in the humor/satire category. An early draft of Ghostwriter was awarded the Faulkner-Wisdom narrative-nonfiction gold medal at the Words and Music Festival in New Orleans. Wells is the author of three historical novels, Fair Youth (Sanctuary Editions, a finalist for 2024 Hawthorne fiction prize), Rommel and the Rebel and Let the Band Play Dixie (Doubleday & Co, agent Sterling Lord). Wells scripted “Return to the River” narrated by James Earl Jones and winner of the 1994 Regional Documentary Emmy Award. Wells’ memoir In Faulkner’s Shadow, about his 38-year marriage to the late Dean Faulkner Wells, niece of William Faulkner, was published in 2020 by University Press of Mississippi.
