BOOK REVIEW: I GREW UP ON A FARM
The author, Alan K. Lewis, grew up on a farm. This book is all about Alan's childhood and what it was like for a child to grow up on a farm.
Alan begins by telling the reader how it was his father's dream to become a farmer. Lester Lewis attended college to learn how to become a good farmer.
Alan tells us about many of the chores he had to do on the farm such as feeding the chickens, pigs and cows. In return, this is how his family made their living. The chickens laid eggs which were sold to customers. They also sold chickens and vegetables.
After the chores were completed, the author tells us about all the fun he had when his cousins came to visit. At night they would sleep in tents under the stars. Alan and his cousins fished almost everyday in the summer.
Alan states that growing up on the farm was fun for he and his brother. However, it was very hard work for his parents.
This is a wonderful book for the young reader to learn about farming. Many children don't realize what all happens when one lives on a farm and this book is a great place to start. Children reading this book will understand and have a basic knowledge of farming once they complete this book.
The illustrator, Bob Fletcher, does an excellent job of interjecting the old photos in with the descriptions. The photos are sure to add a great deal of interest for the young reader. In addition, the pictures will also make any adult reading this book feel nostalgic about their own childhood memories as they turn the pages.
This book is one the young reader will thoroughly enjoy. It is highly recommended.
