When a body is found, Detective Sam O’Neill cannot believe how much the victim looked like his girlfriend, Detective Cassie Maddox. He calls Cassie and asks her to come to the scene. The strange thing is the dead girl is carrying identification indicating she as Alexandra Madison. This is an alias Cassie used at one time while doing undercover work. How could this be? Who is this dead woman?

Cassie has asked to be transferred out of Dublin’s Murder Squad but her boss, Frank Mackey, now sees a perfect chance to solve this case. Since Cassie played the part of Alexandra Madison once before, why not do it again. This way, they could trick the killer into thinking the wound was not fatal.

Everything would be worked out because they would tell the media and the four roommates the same thing – the knife wound was not fatal. Sooner or later the killer would return to finish the job and he or she would be caught.

Cassie soon finds herself getting more and more involved in Alexandra’s life and it starts to become more difficult for her to distinguish between Alexandra and herself.

Is the killer one of Alexandra’s roommates? Is Cassie able to help find the killer before the killer finds her?

The Likeness is an exciting, well-written psychological thriller. I really like the character of Cassie because even though she does not want to return to the Murder Squad, she knows how important it is for the killer to be found. She takes it upon herself to risk her own life in order to do this. I also like the chemistry between Cassie and Detective Sam O’Neill. This story moves at a good pace and the plot could not get any better. The characters are compelling and this is what makes a book a good read. Tana French is a very talented writer and I hope to read more books written by her in the future.
