Detectives Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox are called into the investigation of the murder of a twelve year old girl. The woods where the body was found is being excavated as an archaeological site before a new roadway goes through the area. When the detectives arrive on the scene, Rob suddenly realizes that these woods hold a personal terror for him. Twenty years prior, he and two friends were in these woods playing as they did nearly everyday. On this day however, they didn't come home in the evening for tea. When a search party was formed, only Adam (as Rob was called then) was found with his back against a tree, fingernails dug into the tree trunk and blood filled shoes . He had then and has now, no memory of what happened between the time he and his friends went into the wood and he was found. His two friends were never found. Now here he is, back at the same woods investigating another incident involving a child.

In the Woods, French's debut, has certainly launched her writing career with a bang. The writing is so smooth that readers are sucked in from the first page and the just slide through the story. The book is part police procedural and part psychological thriller. Both parts are done well, but I think French's building of suspense through quite a troubled cast of characters and the twists in the plot make it a superb thriller.

Some readers may not be completely satisfied by the ending, but while I was a bit surprised when the book ended, I think it really opens the door for these characters to have a long run as a series. I can't wait to get my hands on The Likeness, the second book in the series!
