BOOK REVIEW: COME ON DOWN:
When you hear the words “Come On Down” there is only one thing we think of and that is The Price is Right with Bob Barker.
When this show was introduced in 1972, no one realized what an impact it would make on the public. You probably don’t even recognize the name of Stan Blits. He is the man who made the show happen. He was responsible for everything behind the scenes from directing the musical selections to writing the sketches, interviewing contestants and choosing who gets to "come on down". Stan has recently been promoted to co-producer of the show.
The first chapter of this book gives the reader some history as to how the show was created. One of the interesting things is to see how the dress code has changed. When the show first started, it was not unusual to see a contestant in a suit and tie. Every day is moving day on The Price is Right. Long before you hear the screams on the show, scenic designers and set designers are the ones that make it nice for you to look at.
This book will give you a detailed look at what really goes into making The Price is Right including what goes on behind the scenes. If you are a fan of The Price is Right you will truly love all the photos in this book. There is also a photo of the first two ladies who were called “Barker’s Beauties”. If you have watched The Price is Right, I’m sure you noticed many people in the audience wearing T-Shirts with different sayings on them. Included in the photos in this book are some pictures of the people wearing the shirts. Included in the back is an interesting chapter called “Just the Facts Maam” – Things You Don’t Know About the Show. It is unbelievable when you start to read these interesting tidbits about the show. For instance, more than 25,000 cars have been offered through the years. As of this writing, over 58,000 contestants have been called to “Come On Down”. You will be amazed at these facts and figures.
If you are a fan of The Price is Right and I cannot think of anyone who is not, this is the book for you. It has all the facts you ever wanted to know from the very beginning of the show up through the present time. There are some excellent photographs of Bob Barker and his beauties. The book also gives you some detailed descriptions of some of the games played like Plinko, Hole in One, etc. This is a great book and it would make a wonderful collector’s item for anyone who has ever watched The Price is Right. It is filled with facts and many humorous stories about this long running game show. Be sure to add Come On Down to your reading list.
