Featured Book - Strong Darkness by Jon Land

strongdarkness.jpgSynopsis: 1883: Texas Ranger William Ray Strong teams up with Judge Roy Bean to track down the Old West's first serial killer who's stitching a trail of death along the railroad lines slicing their way through Texas.

The Present: Fifth Generation Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong finds herself pursuing an-other serial killer whose methods are eerily similar to the one pursued by her great-grandfather almost a century-and-a-half before. But that's just the beginning of the prob-lems confronting Caitlin in her biggest and most dangerous adventure yet, starting off when the son of her reformed outlaw boy friend Cort Wesley Masters is nearly beaten to death while at college.

The trail of that attack at Brown University leads all the way back to Texas and a Chinese high-tech company recently awarded the contract to build the nation's Fifth Generation wireless network. Li Zhen, a rare self-made man in China and the company's founder, counts that as the greatest achievement of his career. But it's an achievement that hides the true motivations behind a rise fueled by events dating back to the time of Caitlin's great-grandfather. Because the same era that spawned a serial killer who has impossibly resurfaced today also hides the secrets behind Li's thirst for nothing less than China's to-tal domination of the United States.

His fiendishly clever plan is backed by all-powerful elements of the Chinese underworld that will stop at nothing to insure its success. Up against an army at Li's disposal, Caitlin and Cort Wesley blaze a violent trail across country and continent in search of secrets hidden in the past, but it's a secret from the present that holds the means to stop their ad-versary's plot in its tracks, even as a climactic battle dawns with nothing less than the fate of the U.S. at stake. Because there's a darkness coming, and only Caitlin Strong can find the light before it's too late.

Featured Book - The Schwarzschild Radius by Gustavo Florentin

theschwarzschildradius.jpgWhen 18-year-old Rachel Wallen’s sister disappears, she does the one thing the police can’t do: she descends into the netherworld of runaways and predators to find her. Olivia, Rachel’s adopted sister, has been abducted by a killer who auctions the deaths of young girls in an eBay of agony.
Posing as a homeless kid, Rachel enters a runaway shelter where Olivia volunteered. There, she meets Father Evan Massey, the organization’s ambitious young founder. Stunned at the revelation that her Harvard-bound sister was a prostitute, Rachel gets online with Olivia’s many chat mates. One is a Thai girl who is Olivia’s twin sister, Achara. She is a sex slave in Chiang Mai whom Olivia was trying to free when she was abducted. Rachel resolves to follow through with Olivia’s plan to get Achara a U.S. passport and money before her pimp takes her to another brothel. While Massey is in Washington, the body of 16-year-old Kirsten Schrodinger is discovered in the Bronx. Massey is in panic mode and hurries back to New York where he deletes data from his PC and wipes out his camcorder. Rachel locates a porn video that Olivia made with another girl and reluctantly reports this to Detective John McKenna, who is investigating Olivia’s disappearance.
Rachel, now desperate, gets a job as a stripper at a sex emporium where Olivia worked. Her purpose is to approach Sonia, the other girl in the porn video, whom Rachel suspects knows more about her sister’s disappearance than she revealed to the police. The two girls start doing private shows together, stripping in the homes of wealthy clients. One of these men is the killer, and while Sonia sleeps with the clients, Rachel rifles through their homes, looking for some clue to her sister’s whereabouts. She plants a Trojan horse on their computers in order to hack into them later. Rachel steals memory sticks from a rich art dealer’s home and finds images of Olivia and Kirsten Schrodinger on them.
The killer tortures Olivia in live online auctions where captains of industry bid on the method of torment. Soon he will auction her death. Time is running out as Rachel hacks into the clients’ computers and, with the help of her friend, Joules, downloads incriminating files. The killer realizes his PC has been compromised and is able to hack into Rachel’s laptop, identifying her. He sets a clever trap and now Rachel is his next captive.
Police track the killer to an abandoned subway tunnel where he has caches of weapons and supplies. McKenna’s team takes heavy casualties. McKenna is pinned under the rubble of an explosion that collapses part of the tunnel and cannot go on. Now it’s up to Rachel to find a way out of The Schwarzschild Radius.

Featured Book - The Antigone Poems by Marie Slaight and Terrence Tasker (Artist)

theantigonepoems.jpgDescribed by The Washington Independent Review of Books as ‘terrifyingly brilliant,’ The Antigone Poems is a powerful retelling of the ancient Greek tale of defiance and justice. An intensely personal invocation of the Sophocles tragedy, it questions power, punishment and one of mythology’s oldest themes: rebellion.

'Rich in allegory and metaphor...a beautifully bound, impressive collection with language as evocative as its illustrations.' -Kirkus Reviews

'The book itself is an exquisite artefact – something to keep and re-read. Though the poetry isn’t pleasant, it’s powerful, evocative and uncovers a universal vein of anguish that will resonate with all readers'. - Maggie Ball, Compulsive Reader

‘Haunting… written in the 1970s and never released until now, is a disturbingly poignant and startlingly vivid portrait of one woman’s suffering in the face of pain and heartbreak. It will surely not be forgotten after the turn of the last page.’-San Francisco Book Review

Featured Book - The Next Boston Band by Michael Fertik

thenextbostonband.jpgMekhi Bessel was maybe the top indie promoter in all of Greater Boston. He could get anyone to come to anything. He could get the Saudi kids from BU to show up to a football game at BC. He could get the cokehead finals club WASPs from Harvard to a poetry slam at Chocolate City, the Afro-theme house at MIT. And he knew from experience he could get the Euro-Latins from Emerson to dance salsa in the freezing cold to Israeli rock music in the parking lot outside the Beanpot hockey semi-final. He had been an indiscriminate impresario since his sophomore year in college when he produced his first play and charged for it in violation of Theater Club rules. Now, at 24, he had a whole series of gigs under his belt: nightclubs, rock and roll bands, hockey, football, girl’s lacrosse, good seating at the Head of the Charles, poetry reading, hip-hop (battles, a-cappella, and instrumental), dj’s, album launch, magazine launch, school committee candidate (Alan Price, Democrat, victorious), class day at Lesley University, ill-fated steak-and-live-blues restaurant, not-ill-fated brunch-and-live-blues restaurant, independent movie premieres, and the highly lucrative after-hours party. Boston shut down at 1 a.m., so the party had to go somewhere just as it was getting going. Mekhi found the lofts, bought the liquor, paid the dj, and collected the bar and gate.

This is how he had run afoul of the Tygers brothers. They cooked all the nightlife in Boston. Last night was the first time they had given him such a serious beating.

Mekhi's dream was to manage rock and roll bands. Real bands that wrote and performed actual music. But Boston hasn't had a band break out into fame for over a decade. When the chance of a lifetime appears for Mekhi to launch his favorite band onto the national stage, the only thing between Mekhi and his dream are the Tygers, the highest profile gangsters in the city. The Tygers have their eyes on the same national prize, and they figure Mekhi is in hock to them, anyway.

Now finding himself in a fight for his life, and holding on to the dream he has had since a kid, Mekhi's entire life is about to come undone.

Featured Book - My Best Friend and Loyal Companion: This Book is Dedicated to Bandi by Nancy Eaton (Available as a Kindle Download )

bandinewkind;e.jpgSeveral months ago, I had to have my Shih Tzu euthanized. She was very ill and did not want to eat. No one wants their beloved pet to suffer. I was devastated. Today, I am still not over the hurt I feel over her loss.

When I tried to think of a way to honor her, it was difficult to come up with something she really deserved. Then it dawned on me – why not write down my memories of the happy times I spent with this wonderful dog.

I hope others who have animals will enjoy reading about our happy times together.

This book is dedicated to Bandi, my beloved best friend and loyal companion.

All proceeds from this book will be donated to a no kill shelter.
